The official death toll from the latest storm surge surge wave could reach 68, but that does not account for fatalities if the death toll exceeds that number, the Maldives disaster relief agency said in a statement.

“The rescue service is monitoring the situation on the ground, and will send the latest update as soon as possible to the government,” it sa골목id.

“Maldives has been a disaster area in the past, especially in the past 10 years, so the situation we face now is different,” Muhifo Mina, deputy head of relief at the government-appointed emergency committee, told CNN.

Some officials said that after Sunday’s storm surge surge on the island, which reached 16 feet (5.1 meters) higher than normal, the country was struggling to rebuild. “There are still a lot of challenges ahead of us. We will have to do things as fast as possible,” he said.

The government is providing food and water supplies to those who are still stranded and those who’ve been rescued but cannot leave with family members to seek shelter, said Haji Abdulla Mohammed, the chairman of the committee. “We are trying to save lives, protect them and to ensure everyone feels safe,” he told CNN, adding that “all our work is not done.”

Residents of Maldives, also known as the British Virgin Islands or BVI, had no idea it was going to be so severe and many of them said they were glad that the authorities are coming to the rescue.

“We can only pray that the people survive the next day or two. If there is no damage (the island) as of now, then what can we do?” said Mohammad Saeed Mohammed, who works with his mother and older sister as workers at a small construction site.

“It is extremely bad. The whole island has been flooded,” said Saeed Mohammed, whose mom works for a government-subsidized company.

More than 15 miles (26 kilometers) of coastline has been cordoned off and some of the beachfront will be off limits.
